Technology

WTA approaches technology through the lens of our core values, with the goal of supporting students academically, developmentally, and socially.

In The Classroom

With an intentional, researched-based approach, technology can be a powerful tool for learning, allowing teachers a detailed picture of each student’s abilities so they can step in with support or offer new challenges as appropriate. We thoughtfully incorporate technology into our classrooms, setting clear goals and using it as one learning method of many, including small group instruction, collaborative projects, and independent work. In Kindergarten and the Lower School, it is used as a tool to collect data and tailor learning. In the Middle School, students learn how to use technology to be successful in high school, college, and beyond.

In The Curriculum

WTA’s “Practical STEAM” program aims to give students grounding in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. From learning programming and computer science skills, to designing plumbing systems or deploying a Wi-Fi network, students gain practical experience, engage their creativity, and build critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

In Extracurriculars

We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, from sports and drama, to art, chess, and more. Multiple STEAM options are available, including basic coding and Lego engineering. In Middle School, students can join the WTA Robotics Team, which recently took first and second place in a competition against 70 robots from Jewish day schools nationwide. These activities ensure that even as students engage in technical and strategic problem-solving, they are reinforcing values of teamwork, personal responsibility, and mutual accountability.

In The Community

While we believe that technology has many practical applications, we are also mindful of the well-documented impacts of smartphone and social media use on children and adolescents. All school-issued devices are locked down, with access limited to necessary apps and websites. In addition, WTA is a phone-free school for all students, and we actively encourage all families to participate in Wait For Eighth, an initiative that empowers parents to join together and delay giving their children smartphones.
